Welcome to My World. The Difficulty That is the Haitian Journey.

After 6 grueling days in Haiti, my flight from Port au Prince back to the States was delayed by 3 hours.

Missed connectionsAs a result, even though I ran (!) through the airport and breezed through immigration, I missed my connection flight by 20 minutes. At that point, I stood in an empty corridor and used language that would have made even an old sailor blush.

On the plus side of the ledger, when I was finished cussing into the wind, I discovered that my wonderful wife, Alex, had already contacted American Airlines and made arrangements for me to catch the first flight out in the morning. They (Alex and the American representative) had also arranged for me to stay at a nearby hotel and meal vouchers (dinner and breakfast) were thrown in to help ease my disappointment. At this point all looked good.

Of course, when it comes to my Haitian journey where there’s good there must always be some bad. When I finally checked-in at the hotel and attempted to use my meal voucher the front desk clerk informed me that the kitchen had closed just closed. When I asked about using my breakfast voucher she informed me that the kitchen opened at 6:00am. Since I had to leave for the airport at 5:30am it seemed hunger was part of my destiny.

So here I am boarding my flight home and all seems well again … at least for me. Since I’ve been forced to wear my cleanest dirty cloths, I’m sure I’m ruining the day for my seat mates. As they try to endure my aroma, I smile and think to myself, “welcome to my world.”
