Lange Travels to Haiti’s 2010 Earthquake Ceremonial (mass) grave site
Haiti Trip (January ‘19); Day Two:
Today is the anniversary of Haiti’s 2010 Earthquake. To observe this hallowed anniversary, I once again traveled to the main ceremonial (mass) grave site in Titanyen. At my side were three men (Aby, Reginald and Ronald) I have come to consider as my brothers.
Some friendships are forged in laughter and good times. Not ours. Instead, we are bound together by the angst of filling burial pits for weeks on end, by mapping out unknown mass grave sites for years and by risking arrest to protect the bodies from continually being desecrated.
While the four of us couldn’t be any more different, we collectively believe this fact: The dead are never dead until they are forgotten and we refuse to allow even one soul to be left in anguished obscurity. This is our commitment and no amount of time or hardships will keep us from providing dignity for the dead.
