Haiti: 10,714 square miles of land and almost none of it for sale

It’s been over a year since Haiti’s devastating earthquake and most of the world views Haiti’s reconstruction, or lack thereof, through confused and angry eyes. For those of us who care about Haiti, we see millions of Haitians either homeless or encamped in tent cities. And day after day we hold out hope that Haiti’s reconstruction effort will finally kick in. Alias, Haiti’s fairytale ending has yet to arrive, leaving Haitians to wake up to another day of misery, or at least those lucky enough to wake up will wake up another day of misery.

While there are thousands of reasons why Haiti has stayed mired in misery, it appears that that one of the most significant factor thwarting Haiti’s emergence from the rubble is this: land that is available for sale.

Of course, it seems somewhat ridicules that millions of Haitians are living a life less than that of a dog when there appears to be so much undeveloped land in every corner of Haiti.  So, the question that begs to be asked is this: Why is it so hard to buy and to develop land in Haiti? In my next post, I will provide the obstacles, as I see them, relate to land ownership and develolpment in Haiti.

In the meantime, what has been your experience when it comes to finding or purchasing land for a project in Haiti?

  2. Thank you for your insightful commentary. Without question, Haiti suffers from a plurality of environmental issues. As a result, we (HR&DC) are committed to infusing science into our ever-evolving business model and see Haiti’s environmental concerns as opportunities and not as obstacles.

Over the course of the next two months, I will be announcing at least 3 new strategic alliance partners, each focusing on Haiti’s under-realized land and labor potential. As your schedule permits, come back and see who we have partnered with and tell us if you think we are heading in the right direction. Take care.
