Education: Critical for a Haitian Renaissance

by / Tuesday, 18 January 2011 / Published in Economic Development, Education, Featured, Recovery, Self Reliant Haiti

A Foreign Policy Association (FPA) article entitled The Future of Education in Haiti written just after the earthquake provides a good case for schools being a method of returning children’s lives to a sense to normalcy in the aftermath of a disaster.  The problem is Haiti’s education system was in complete disarray even before the earthquake.

Even though Haiti Recovery & Development Company’s education focus will primarily be on adults training (see Workforce & Training for a Haitian Renaissance), to inspire a Haitian renaissance education will be a core component to this social awakening.  That means big change is needed in Haiti’s education system.

FPA goes on to state, that according to the 2007 National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction Paper, the literacy rate in Haiti is 51.9%, 60% of the young population in Haiti leaves school after their primary education, and only 2% of the youth population completes secondary education.

There are many organizations suited to deal with Haiti’s education crisis..  At HR&DC we are acutely aware of  education’s role in the rebirth of Haiti.  That’s why our plans include the availability of public schools for all children that live within and around each of our 5 cities for Haiti.  It is why we are actively seeking alliance partners to assist us in this area of our master plan. To us, education is a non-negotiable requirement in Haiti’s rebirth!

What are your thoughts on solving the plight of Haiti’s education system?
